Which are the forward-thinking retailers in Malaysia? Watsons has grown 18x from 100K in 2015 to 1.8M monthly visits in 2019, pulling away from the rest.
The last time we compiled and wrote about this was 4 years ago, this time around the chart is expanded from top 10, to top 23 online shopping sites by big retailers in Malaysia.
While Senheng was leading comfortably 4 years ago, the pole position has now been claimed by Watsons. Watsons has increased its website traffic by more than 18 times from 2015, pulling away from the rest. With 1.8 million monthly traffic, Watsons has almost double the traffic of Tesco at second-place.
On another hand, we welcome new entries like MR DIY, JD Sports etc. to the chart.
While we were using SimilarWeb 4 years ago, the data is sourced from SEMrush this time around (for the month of March 2019). From our observations, SEMrush's data is closer to the real numbers if compared to SimilarWeb.
Do take note though that the figures are by no means exact but it serves as a good reference and for comparison purpose.

- Focus on established chain store retailers instead of those boutique ones, pure-play online retailers (or those started from e-commerce) are not being considered.
- Retailers without e-commerce sites like AEON, AEON BiG, Giant etc. are not shortlisted.
- Only e-commerce sites with more than 50,000 monthly visits are being listed here.
- Some retailers like UNIQLO, IKEA, Nike are using single-domain strategy to serve all markets, they are not being included here as it is challenging to get local data.
- International retailers like Watsons, Tesco, Sephora, Adidas are using the local domain hence they are shortlisted here.
